WHILE ZAC EFRON was promoting High School Musical 3 in Paris in 2008, he was having dinner with Kenny Ortega.
Kenny’s phone rang and the director made a gesture to Zac, indicating that he’d be very interested to speak to the person on the other end of the call.
Zac came over, and it was Michael Jackson on the phone. The young actor basically lost his shit. He was excited and shaking, and didn’t know what to say to the legendary singer. Jackson said “Hi, who’s this?” to which Zac replied “This is Zac Efron. I’m a massive fan. I’m an actor, you’re my hero.”
Beyond that, Zac was completely lost for words. Michael said “That’s really nice! Can you hand the phone back to Kenny?”
Thinking he blew it, Zac Efron was freaking out. He couldn’t believe he had really spoken to Michael Jackson. A few minutes later, Kenny’s phone rang again. Zac was called to speak to Michael Jackson once again.
Perhaps after Googling Zac Efron, or remembering who he was after the call ended, Michael Jackson said: “Oh, this is Zac Efron, from High School Musical? I love what you do. I’m a huge fan.”
Zac was extremely excited:
I lost it. I lost my balance, I think I fell over. I was like “You know who I am?” I started crying. I was a mess. I was making a fool out of myself. I slid down to the floor, pathetically and professed how much I loved him. I said “You’re my hero! You’re the reason I do what I do. Thank you so much Michael, for everything.”
Zac explained that his joy managed to make MJ cry. At the end of the phone call, Michael said:
Hey Zac. Isn’t it awesome? Dreams really do come true, don’t they?
That comment did absolutely nothing to stop Zac from crying.
