IT WAS ANNOUNCED today that The Cranberries are making a comeback – with gigs later this year and a new album on the way.
But of all the things they’ve given us down the years, one thing is certain:
It’s impossible to listen to Zombie and not singalong
It’s a certified banger
If it comes on on a night out, all bets are off
And when the bit with 1916 comes on everyone sings it that much louder
On the second mention of “bombs”, it’s universally acknowledged that you’re allowed roar for the remainder of the song:
It’s the same old theme
Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they’re still fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying
The fact that the lyrics deal with a tragic IRA bombing in 1993 gives a historical weight to the song
Roaring along to it is quite a sound when heard in full flight
And there’s that odd satisfaction that comes with discovering some people abroad think it’s actually about zombies
The chorus also happens to perfectly describes how catchy the song is too:
“In your head, in your head…”
The ultimate Irish shoutalong banger
TUNE.
