ACTRESS ZSA ZSA Gabor has successfully undergone a life-saving operation to amputate most of her right leg, after suffering a gangrene infection.

The 93-year-old remains in a reportedly “frail” condition in hospital in Los Angeles following the operation.

Gabor had a fall last July, which led to a hip replacement. She was subsequently hospitalised several times for swelling in the legs, blood clots, and gangrene. After consulting with Gabor’s husband, Prince Frederic Von Anhalt, doctors made the decision to amputate when powerful antibiotics proved unsuccessful in conquering the infection.

Dr David Rigberg, an associate professor of vascular surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles told the media:

Ms Gabor needed an amputation above her knee due to poor circulation and a large ulcerated area on her right leg. The surgery today went well, however, she is in frail health so we will continue to monitor her closely.

CNN reports that Gabor’s husband did not inform her of the nature of the surgery before she underwent the amputation. “Eventually, she will feel it, and then she will ask me and at that moment I don’t even want to think about it,” he said.

Gabor has been largely confined to a wheelchair since being involved in a car accident in Los Angeles in 2002. Last August, she was read the last rites after a health scare.
