9 things people from Limerick are sick of hearing

A boy the kid!

LIKE IT OR not, different areas around Ireland have their place in our shared national consciousness.

Limerick has a pretty strong identity as a city. We all know certain notions spring to mind when it’s mentioned – not just screaming “A boy the kid!” if someone scores in Thomond Park – but some things, Limerick residents are just tired of hearing.

1. “It’s very rough down there isn’t it?”

Listen. Every town and city in the world – not just in Ireland – has its good points and its bad points. As Chris Crocker so memorably exhorted on behalf of Britney: Leave Limerick alone!

2. “That’s Limerick Citaaay”

The Rubberbandits have a lot to answer for in regard to people from anywhere around Ireland thinking they can suddenly do a pitch-perfect imitation of a Limerick accent. Leave it to the professionals, lads. “Yaaaa”? No, actually.

3. ”What’s Willie O’Dea like?”

We can blame the Rubberbandits for this one too.

4. Anything relating to the phrase “Stab City”

You know what? No. Just no.

5. “Ye’ll never beat Tipp on a Sunday”

Ah good old GAA rivalries. The good thing about them is that you can look forward to hearing about them every single summer for the rest of your life.

6. “Effin?!”

Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up.

7. “Is Limerick really a lady?”

There are not enough eyes to roll in the world.

8. “The best road out of Limerick is…”

It’s the Dock Road. It’s always the fecking Dock Road. Why did you even ask?

9. “Gowl”

NO! That’s a Limerick thing. Stop it. You can’t have it. It belongs to Limerick and Limerick only.
